Media Training

Rockford Gray’s media training helps leaders communicate clearly, confidently, and effectively in every interview. Built on decades of real newsroom experience, our coaching prepares you to deliver your message with precision. Whether speaking to print, radio, or television reporters. We customize each training to your goals, your role, and the communication moments that matter most.

We have a real-world approach. Our media trainers think and ask questions like reporters because we were reporters. We have seen firsthand how easy it is to become entangled in your own words and how a reporter’s question can cause even the most experienced spokesperson to stumble.

Rockford Gray shares proven tools that will help you deliver your important messages and advance your goals.

What Effective Media Training Looks Like

Media appearances are high-pressure moments, but they don’t need to feel that way. Our media training focuses on the essential skills leaders need to stay on message, respond with clarity, and project confidence, even under scrutiny. We prepare you to speak with a reporter, inform your key audiences, and advance your perspective. Remember: Speaking with a reporter is not a conversation. While an interview with a reporter may seem like a conversation, treating it that way will often get you in trouble. Through realistic practice interviews, thoughtful feedback, and personalized coaching, we help you strengthen:
    • Message delivery
    • Management of the Interview
    • Handling challenging questions
    • Staying calm under pressure
    • Communicating with clarity and purpose

What You’ll Learn in Our Media Training Sessions

Every training is customized, but common focus areas include:

    • How to prepare for interviews and public engagements
    • Techniques for incorporating your message
    • How journalists think—and what they look for
    • Strategies for managing difficult or unexpected questions
    • Effective storytelling across communication platforms

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW LONG ARE MEDIA TRAINING SESSIONS?

Sessions range from one-hour virtual coaching blocks to multi-day in-person workshops, depending on your needs.

IS THE MEDIA TRAINING INDIVIDUALIZED?

Yes. Every session is tailored to your industry, experience level, communication style, and upcoming media opportunities.

CAN MY TEAM PARTICIPATE?

Absolutely. We regularly lead group media training sessions for executive teams, departments, and project leads.

WHO LEADS THE MEDIA TRAINING?

We do. The professionals who help prepare for your training will also deliver it. Our coaches and former journalists bring deep experience in interviewing, message development, and communication strategy.

HOW IS YOUR TAINING SETUP AND ORGANIZED? DO YOU DO ROLE-PLAYS OR MOCK INTERVIEWS?

Certainly. The ultimate structure of each session depends on what you need. We suggest starting with an upfront training session, which can last 10-90 minutes, followed by one-on-one role-play coaching. We conduct mock interviews in which we act as the reporter or interviewee. We will video record the session and then review the video to provide real-time coaching and critique.
