What Is Media Training?
Rockford Gray’s media training dramatically increases your chances for a successful experience talking to the media with our custom tailored approach.
While an interview with a reporter may seem like a conversation, treating it that way will often get your organization into trouble. The media skills you need for a successful media interview are:
- Creating a powerful set of messages and having the discipline to stay on message
- Knowing the techniques reporters use to manipulate an interview
- Tools to manage the interview to a successful outcome
We have a proven program that gives spokespeople real-world tools for successful interviews. Rockford Gray’s principals devote time and attention to researching the specific issues the media will likely pursue.
The training sessions typically contain four phases:
- We start with Rockford Gray’s Media Skills Boot Camp. This first phase focuses on the rules of engagement with the media.
- Identifying a strong and credible message is at the core of our approach. This exercise results in powerful quotes and sound bites that actually make their way into the story.
- Next, we focus on anticipating the questions you are most likely to get from an interviewer . . . including the toughest questions you could be asked.
- Finally, we create role-playing scenarios for mock interviews that are topical and relevant to the individual participant. The role-play interviews are recorded and then reviewed with our participants in real-time.
We work with our participants to formulate appropriate responses that satisfy reporters… build the spokesperson’s confidence and, most importantly, advance the organization’s public relations goals.
